Mapping Culture and History Workshop, University of Newcastle/Online, 17-18 November

Join us for an event celebrating the possibilities of digital mapping for the humanities, hosted by the Time-Layered Cultural Map of Australia (based in Newcastle) and the Australian Cultural Data Engine (led by the University of Melbourne).

We are bringing together instructors, presenters, and anyone interested in learning about mapping in a series of workshop sessions and plenary talks. We are targeting honours and postgraduate students, humanities researchers, gallery, library and museum staff, and local historians, in particular, but all are welcome. The face to face events will take place at the University of Newcastle’s NUSpace building in the city campus, with some hybrid sessions and some via Zoom only.

2023 Toynbee First Book Workshop Competition

Applications for the 2023 Toynbee First Book Workshop Competition are now open, and we especially encourage scholars from the global south to apply. You may access the full application details here.

The Toynbee First Book Workshop Competition aims to support early career scholars in global history at a pivotal moment in their scholarly trajectory. The Toynbee Prize Foundation (TPF) will fund an annual first book manuscript/work in progress workshop with scholars specifically chosen to comment on the selected Toynbee Early Career Scholar’s project. Commenters will include esteemed global historians and scholars with broad methodological affinity, rather than simply topic experts of the sort who are customarily part of the standard peer review process at an academic press. In this way, we hope to help develop the impact and relevance of early career scholars’ projects through diverse, global perspectives. The workshop will take place online, and parts of it will be available to a wider public through the TPF website. We especially encourage academics from the Global South to apply.

Eligibility: Early career scholars with substantially complete first book manuscripts (at least 50% of the planned book) available in English on global, imperial, comparative, world, or transnational history are eligible to apply.

Application process: Please email a two-page book proposal, CV, and one chapter of the manuscript to toynbeefoundation@gmail.com by October 22, 2022.

ANZAMEMS DEVELOPMENT SCHEME (ADS) 2021

Dear ANZAMEMS ECRs and HDR Students,

I’m writing to provide an update on the ANZAMEMS DEVELOPMENT SCHEME (ADS), our forthcoming workshop series for HDR students and ECRs. Since our last communication with the ANZAMEMS membership, we have finalised the seminar schedule and topics (see below). We have 27 members enrolled in the workshops, and we are very much looking forward to meeting them. For any HDRs and ECRs who missed the first call, we invite them to apply to join the scheme.

CARMEN: The Worldwide Medieval Network – (Virtual) Annual General Meeting 2021

“The Middle Ages in the Americas”

The annual CARMEN open meeting brings together scholars and professionals from across the world in participatory and interactive formats, including talks by leading scholars, paper sessions, project development workshops, and our annual ‘Forum’ showcasing projects, institutions and research centers. This year’s meeting will take place on 3-5 September 2021, co-sponsored by the Medieval Academy of America and Harvard University’s Committee on Medieval Studies. The theme for this year’s CARMEN meeting, “The Middle Ages in the Americas”, highlights our North American venue, and is meant to encourage scholarly conversation on the rich history of Medieval Studies in the Western hemisphere, as well as the myriad ways in which “the medieval” has been portrayed and appropriated within the art, architecture, literature, and popular culture of the Americas.

Due to the continuing challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, we will not be able to gather in Boston as originally planned. Instead, our meeting will take place virtually, featuring a combination of synchronous lectures, sessions, and workshops that will take place from 1000 to 1500 EDT on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. In addition to keynote talks by Professor Laura Cleaver (School of Advanced Studies, University of London) and Professor Cord Whitaker (Wellesley College) and a series of talks on this year’s theme, the 2021 CARMEN meeting also will feature presentations of new and early-stage project proposals submitted for this year’s CARMEN Project Prize, the winner of which will be announced at the meeting’s conclusion.
