The ANZAMEMS-ARC Humanities Award for Original Research is aimed at Early Career Researchers and independent scholars. Applications for 2021 are open NOW and will close on 31 January, 2021.
This prize consists of a book contract with Arc Humanities Press and a grant of $10,000 AUD to cover the costs of GOLD OPEN ACCESS for your book.

ANZAMEMS-ARC Humanities Borderlines Award
The Borderlines Award is aimed at promoting scholarship with particular strengths in opening up new territorial perspectives, subject-areas, or interdisciplinary methods. This is a biennial prize and will first be awarded in 2022, with applications closing on 31 January 2022.

ANZAMEMS Membership Fees for 2022
A reminder that ANZAMEMS membership fees for 2022 are now due.
Thank you to all members who have already paid their 2022 membership fees.
For any of you who are unsure if you are already a financial member for 2022, please contact me directly before renewing your membership.
For those who haven’t yet paid their 2022 membership fees, please visit the ANZAMEMS website for details of our current subscription rates. Here, you can make a payment via:
– Pay by credit card via our secure online payment facility (provided by UWA). NB: If you have trouble with this online payment system, please clear the cookies on your internet browser and try again, and/or try using an alternate internet browser.
– Pay via credit card/PayPal account via our new secure PayPal cart system. NB: If you do not have a PayPal account (or do not wish to create one), after clicking on the relevant payment link, do not log into PayPal but instead please select the Pay with Card option.
If you prefer, you may complete a hard copy membership form. Please contact info@anzamems.org. Please note, we no longer accept cheques as a form of payment, and you will need to pay by bank transfer if you choose this option.
Please note that in order for you to receive a hard copy of Parergon 39.1 you will need to pay your 2022 membership fees by the 31 March 2021 deadline.
Please also note that you will need to be a financial member to vote at the upcoming AGM in April as well as to nominate for any vacant Committee member roles. You will also need to be a financial member to apply for the various ANZAMEMS/Parergon sponsored prizes and bursaries, and to access the member’s registration rate for the upcoming ANZAMEMS conference.
Finally, please also note, as per the ANZAMEMS constitution, membership terminates when annual dues have become more than six months in arrears. If you have not paid your membership by June 30, you will be removed from the ANZAMEMS mailing list, and will no longer be able to access other member benefits.
If you wish to cancel your membership, please inform the Secretary, Dr Karen Jillings (K.A.Jillings@massey.ac.nz), in writing (an email is fine), as per the ANZAMEMS constitution. Please also copy info@anzamems.org into this email.
Call for Nominations: Parergon 2022 Early Career Committee
Parergon, the journal of the Australian and New Zealand Association for Medieval and Early Modern Studies (Inc.), seeks nominations for interested early career scholars within ANZAMEMS to participate as members of the 2022 Early Career Committee (ECC). The aim of this committee is to recognise and support early career researcher contributions to ANZAMEMS, and specifically, Parergon.
The ECC meets quarterly, and offers an opportunity to provide advice to the Editorial team and gain a deeper understanding of the detailed intellectual and practical processes of production of a prestigious, peer-reviewed scholarly journal.
Parergon 2022 Early Career Committee Call for Nominations
Parergon, the journal of the Australian and New Zealand Association for Medieval and Early Modern Studies (Inc.), seeks nominations for interested early career scholars within ANZAMEMS to participate as members of the 2022 Early Career Committee (ECC). The aim of this committee is to recognise and support early career researcher contributions to ANZAMEMS, and specifically, Parergon.
The ECC meets quarterly, and offers an opportunity to provide advice to the Editorial team and gain a deeper understanding of the detailed intellectual and practical processes of production of a prestigious, peer-reviewed scholarly journal.
Additionally, participation in the ECC will provide valuable service experience for those interested in pursuing academic and publishing career pathways. Membership of the ECC is not a paid position.
A maximum of 7 places are currently available for the 2022 ECC Committee.
Terms are for a calendar year, with a possible maximal renewal of an additional, immediate year.
Nominations are sought from late-stage doctoral students through to those five years post PhD or equivalent), who are current members of ANZAMEMS.
Applications should consist of a CV, and a covering email outlining disciplinary expertise to the Editors of Parergon, info@anzamems.org.
Doctoral students wishing to apply should also provide an email from their supervisor indicating support for their application.
Nominations close on Monday 10 January 2021. Successful candidates will be notified in late January.
Selection criteria
Candidates are expected to be available to make 4 meetings a year by skype/zoom link.
No prior experience is necessary
The Editorial team will seek to achieve a broad disciplinary spread among the committee.

CFP – Connecting bodies at/of work in Oceania #1: Sustaining remote research in Covid-times.
Round table at the ANZAMEMS Conference, Perth 27-30 June 2022 (and online).
For many medievalists and early modernists, the pandemic disrupted access to primary research sources, but can we build more environmentally and socially sustainable academic practices out of this apparent loss?
This call is for a 10-minute reflection on your remote and/or collaborative research practices connecting you to existing or new research corpora during our long confinement. Reflections on failed attempts to connect are also welcome at this exploratory academic practice round table.
The hope is that through collaboration and discussion we can build shared practices that connect researchers with each other and to corpora (bodies at/of work), to improve the diversity, and the social and environmental sustainability of early modern research.

Call for Papers: 2022 ANZAMEMs Ceræ panel
The Australian and New Zealand Association for Medieval and Early Modern Studies is hosting a hybrid online and at the University of Western Australia for it’s 13th biennial conference, with the topic “Reception and Emotion”. Ceræ is accepting submissions for a panel with the following themes.
Themes: Reception, Emotion, and Witchcraft
As Michael Ostling and Laura Kounine have pointed out, the history of witchcraft has always also been a history of emotions: the victims, the accusers, and the witches themselves. It demonstrates the importance of perspective: whose emotions are we permitted to see, from whose standpoint? What role do emotions play in creating the idea of witchcraft, and how do these differ over time and space? The intersection of the history of emotions and the history of witchcraft also highlight the importance of reception (both premodern and present-day) and concerns regarding methodology (in both fields). It also invites scholars to critically consider the additional intersection of rationality, as this is often contrasted with both emotions and witchcraft – often to the detriment of the latter. Does this help us to uncover particularly elusive aspects of premodern witchcraft, or reinforce negative stereotypes? Ceræ invites submissions for papers to discuss these themes.
Paper proposals may include but are not limited to
•To what extent are emotions and a lack of reason which informs them one of the only ways which we try to understand the irrational within a system of dogmatic beliefs?
•Differences in the intersection of emotions and witchcraft between the medieval and early modern periods.
•Regional differences in associations and intersections between emotions and witchcraft.
•The vulnerability of marginalised communities to these associations and intersections.
•Emotions that are brought into particularly close association with witchcraft; conversely, those which are not, and what impact this can have for our understanding of premodern witchcraft.
•The additional intersection of emotion, witchcraft, and religion.

ANZAMEMS 2022 Conference: Reception and Emotion Update!
We are pleased to announce that ANZAMEMS’ upcoming 2022 conference will now be a hybrid conference, with both online and in-person presentation and attendance catered for. The conference will be held from 27–30 June 2022!
Because of this, we have decided to extend the CFP and the new closing date for applications will be 10 January 2022! Applications for Bursaries & Prizes are open, and the closing date for them has also been extended to 10 January 2022.
Keep an eye out for some exciting upcoming details, including a conference dinner, in person excursions, and panels and exhibitions for both online and in person attendees!

CFP – Royal Bodies panel
This panel will convene at the Thirteenth Biennial Conference of the Australia and New Zealand Association of Medieval and Early Modern Studies (#anza22), to be held in-person at The University of Western Australia, Perth, Australia, and online via Zoom, from 27-30 June 2022.
The idea of the ‘king’s two bodies’, a duality predicated on the idea that a monarch possessed two bodies, a natural body and a body politic – the former mortal, the latter an embodiment of both the nation and the authority of sovereignty – has long been of interest to scholars of medieval and early modern monarchies.
The body of a monarch remains a contest site, with the life, health, fertility, and sexuality of kings or queens continuing to be an important part of politics. Royal scandal graces the covers of newspapers and magazines and trends on social media, and royal weddings, births, and deaths continue to capture the public’s imagination and interest.
We seek papers that examine the significance of the royal body, in particular, the reception of the royal body across time periods, cultures, and media and how royal bodies both convey and elicit emotions.
Proposals for 20-minute conference papers should consist of:
- A title
- An abstract (max. 200 words)
- A short biography (max. 50 words)
