A huge range of Medieval-type activities will be on show at the Supreme Court Gardens from 10am, with the day’s festivities leading into a night of entertainment from 5.30pm to 9.30pm.

Crowds can watch sword fighting and fencing displays as well as demonstrations involving birds of prey, sword swallowers and jesters or jugglers and circus acts.

People can also participate in crafts, artisan workshops, camel and pony rides along with many  other activities for adults and children.

Entry fees at the gate are:

  • Children under 13 years accompanied with an adult are free
  • $5 concession (all cards), student card and adults dressed in costume
  • $10 adult
  • $25 for large families

Bristol University – Lecturer in Theatre and Performance Studies

The Department of Music, Film, Theatre at Bristol University seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Theatre and Performance Studies. Candidates’ research strengths may be in any area of performance and/or theatre; however, applications are especially sought from those with expertise in the directing and dramaturgy of play-based theatre, particularly, though not necessarily, of the early modern period.

Candidates will possess a PhD and be expected to develop and maintain an internationally significant research profile, whether through publication and/or practice-as-research. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to mixed mode teaching delivery of Theatre/Performance at BA, MA and PhD levels, leading lectures, seminars and practice-based workshops, and to assist with other aspects of the running of the Department and the delivery of its academic programmes.

Based in the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, you will be a part of a vibrant creative community of scholars and production staff. The department has a long record of internationally-recognised achievement in research and teaching. As part of the Drama Department, it was awarded a 5* rating in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise and achieved an excellent rating in the RAE 2008. The department houses the University’s Theatre Collection, which constitutes one of the largest archives in the world of British performance and theatre history. Current research interests amongst staff include work in historical theatre reconstruction, vernacular dramatic traditions of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, adaptation and translation, live art and cross-media performance as well as investigations into related histories.

Conditions
Applicants need to have an MA in English Literature or English Medieval Studies, or a qualification deemed equivalent, be fluent in written and spoken English, and be able to provide a PhD research proposal.

Candidates fulfilling these requirements who can also speak French will be at an advantage for this post.

Job Description 
This is a 70% post, which increases to 100% in the third year.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach literary analysis skills to first-year students, as well as a BA seminar (2-4 hours a week throughout the year). The post will also involve student evaluation and orientation and administrative tasks. At least 40% of the post will be devoted to research publications and the preparation of a doctoral thesis, supervised by Prof. Guillemette Bolens.

Starting Salary
CHF 46,247 pa (ca £ 29,863) in the first year for an assistant who already has an MA; the maximum salary is CHF 78,528 pa (ca £ 50,708) after four years.

The assistant is nominated for an initial period of two years, renewable for two successive periods of respectively two years and one year. Science and Medieval and Early Modern Literature Symposium – Call For Papers

‘Science and Medieval and Early Modern Literature’ Symposium

MEMC will host a symposium on ‘Science and Medieval and Early Modern Literature’ on 23 September to tie in with Dr Rhodri Lewis’s (St Hugh’s College, Oxford) time with MEMC as a Visiting Scholar (1-30 September). We are interpreting ‘science’ very broadly to encompass a wide array of fields. Contact Liam (liam.semler@sydney.edu.au) if you would like to participate in the symposium as a speaker.

The symposium will be accompanied by a PATS (postgraduate advanced training seminar) organised by the Centre for the History of Emotions on the following day (24 September). This will probably be on the topic of the history of medicine: all inquiries to Gabriel Watts (gabriel.watts@sydney.edu.au). Further research schedules and notices for research events will be circulated as they become available.

ANZAMEMS Facebook group for Postgraduate and ECR members

The Australian and New Zealand Association for Medieval and Early Modern Studies (Inc.) would like to announce the availability of a Facebook group for Postgraduate and Early Career Researcher members of the association. As an added feature of membership, scholars setting out in their careers will gain access to a space for the sharing of relevant links, discussion about medieval and early modern studies, and community support. The group is moderated by James Smith (Postgraduate Representative for Australia) and Daniel Leadbeater (Postgraduate Representative for New Zealand).

We will be beginning group activity with a survey about desirable topics for a future association Postgraduate Advanced Training Seminar (PATS). Are you studying Shakespeare at college, university, or for leisure? Are you going to be using the archives or library of The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust? You might be interested in applying for the Louis Marder Shakespeare Centre Scholarship (or recommending it to a friend).

This annual scholarship of £1,000 will be awarded to ‘a worthy Shakespearian currently pursuing a Ph.D. or similar study, who pledges to produce an original, publishable article on a previously approved literary, historical, or biographical topic about William Shakespeare (as opposed to character analysis or authorship studies) from The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust Library or Archives, approved by The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust’s assigned authorities, within two years of the accepted funds. The intent of the award is to inspire, stimulate, and promote archival scholarship.’

Five Fellowships in Data Curation for Medieval Studies
CLIR/DLF Postdoctoral Fellowship in Data Curation for Medieval Studies

The CLIR/DLF Postdoctoral Fellowship in Data Curation for Medieval Studies is an expansion of the CLIR Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in Academic Libraries. These five, fully-funded fellowships will provide recent Ph.D.s with professional development, education, and training opportunities in data curation for Medieval Studies. Through this program, CLIR seeks to raise awareness and build capacity for sound data management practice throughout the academy.

Each fellowship is two year appointment, with a $60,000 salary, plus benefits, and a yearly travel and research stipend. Fellows will be placed at five institutions in the United States and Canada: Johns Hopkins, North Carolina State University, Stanford University, University of Texas at Austin, University of Toronto.

Note: Review of applications is already underway, but applications will be accepted until all positions are filled.

International Medieval Meeting Lleida 2013

The International Medieval Meeting Lleida will be held between 26 June and 28 June, 2013, at the University of Lleida, Spain. Some of the leading medievalists from across the globe will take part in four congresses which focus on various key aspects of medieval history, art history, archaeology, literature and language. Specialists in a wide range of aspects of Medieval Studies will introduce their research at this meeting, while others will present sessions, individual papers and posters on different aspects of research in the history of the Middle Ages. There will also be sessions dedicated to the promotion and management of research, the application of new technologies in the Humanities and the promotion of historical heritage. Furthermore, there will be important presentations concerning the publication and dissemination of research in medieval history.

SAIMS/TMJ Essay Prize – Call For Applications

The St Andrews Institute of Mediaeval Studies (SAIMS) invites entries for its annual Essay Competition, submitted according to the following rules:

  1. The competition is open to all medievalists who are graduate students or have completed a higher degree within the last three years. For PhD students the time period of three years begins from the date of the successful viva, but excludes any career break. Any candidate in doubt of their eligibility should contact the Director of SAIMS at saimsmail@st-andrews.ac.uk.
  2. A candidate may make only one submission to the competition.
  3. The submission must be the candidate’s own work, based on original research, and must not have been previously published or accepted for publication.
  4. Submissions are welcomed on any topic that falls within the scope of medieval studies.
  5. The submission should be in the English language.
  6. The word limit is 8,000 words, including notes, bibliography, and any appendices.
  7. The text should be double-spaced, and be accompanied by footnotes with short referencing and a full bibliography of works cited, following the guidelines on the TMJ webpage: http://www.standrews.ac.uk/saims/tmj.htm. An abstract of 200 words should preface the main text.
  8. The deadline for submissions is 1 May 2013.
  9. The essay must be submitted electronically to saimsmail@st-andrews.ac.uk, in both Word and PDF formats, to arrive by the deadline.
  10. The submission must be accompanied by a completed cover sheet and signed declaration; the template for this is available at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/saims/tmj.htm. The candidate’s name should not appear on the submission itself, nor be indicated in any form in the notes.
  11. Decisions concerning the Competition lie with the Editors and Editorial Board of The Mediaeval Journal, who can, if they consider there to have been appropriate submissions, award an Essay Prize and in addition declare a proxime accessit. In the unlikely event that, in the judges’ opinion, the material submitted is not of a suitable standard, no prize will be awarded.
  12. The value of the Prize is £500.
  13. A candidate whose entry is declared proxime accessit will be awarded £100.
  14. In addition to the Prize, the winning submission will be published within twelve months in The Mediaeval Journal, subject to the usual editorial procedures of the journal.
