Fellowship Details

  • Amount: $60,000 plus $5,000 for research and travel expenses
  • Tenure: the 2018-19 academic year
  • Completed applications must be submitted through the ACLS Online Fellowship and Grant Application system (ofa.acls.org) no later than 9 pm Eastern Daylight Time, October 25, 2017.
  • Notifications will be sent via email by late March 2018.

ACLS invites applications for Getty/ACLS Postdoctoral Fellowships in the History of Art, made possible by the generous support of the Getty Foundation. These fellowships are intended to support an academic year of research and/or writing by early career scholars for a project that will make a substantial and original contribution to the understanding of art and its history. ACLS will award 10 fellowships, each with a stipend of $60,000 plus $5,000 for research and travel during the award period, and a one-week residence at the Getty Center following the fellowship. The ultimate goal of the project should be a major piece of scholarly work by the applicant.

Getty/ACLS Postdoctoral Fellowships in the History of Art are portable and are tenable at the fellow’s home institution, abroad, or at another appropriate site for research. These fellowships may not be held concurrently with other fellowships and grants, but may be combined with sabbatical pay up to an amount equal to the candidate’s current academic year salary.

The Department of History at Lund University is a large institution with two sections, History and Human Rights Studies. There are about 50 permanent teachers and researchers. The Department of History hosts the National Graduate School in Historical Studies. At the moment (2017) the department has 28 Ph.D. students employed.

Human Rights Studies is a multidisciplinary research environment focusing on the historical writing of human rights in the early modern period, and on rights in political philosophy, religious affairs, military and humanitarian interventions, nationalism and women’s movements around the world.

A common denominator in the research at the section of History is a focus on cultural history in a broad sense. Chronologically, the research covers the period from the Middle Ages to the present, with a certain emphasis on the early modern period and the twentieth century. Part of the research is directed towards uses of history and the history of knowledge. The department is leading in the fields of historical culture and history didactics.

The Faculty of History is seeking to appoint an unestablished University Lecturer in Early Medieval History, based in central Cambridge. This post is fixed-term for twelve months from 1 October 2017. The full incremental salary range for the post is advertised in order to demonstrate the progression of the grade. In the majority of cases appointments will be made at the grade minimum.

The successful candidate must hold, by the start of the appointment, a doctorate in a relevant field and outstanding abilities in teaching and research.

The postholder will teach primarily at undergraduate level but with some opportunity for involvement in the MPhil programme. In particular, the postholder will be expected to: (a) contribute to core teaching in Paper 2 (British Political History, 380-1100), Paper 7 (British Economic and Social History, 380-1100) and Paper 13 (European History, 31 BC-AD 900) in Part I of the Historical Tripos (years 1-2); (b) supervise undergraduates in Part I Medieval history; and (c) supervise undergraduates in final-year dissertations. Responsibilities may also include (d) a contribution to one or more Options on the MPhil in Medieval History, depending upon specialisation and student demand. Furthermore, the postholder will be required to examine at all levels and to assist with academic and administrative matters in Medieval history.

The successful candidate will: have excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; show a commitment to supporting students academically in the Faculty; become a regular participant in the Cambridge Medieval History Seminar; and participate in the life of the Faculty and University more generally. The successful candidate will be part of a lively and intellectually stimulating research community in the Ancient and Medieval History Subject Group, which performs to the highest international levels in research and publications.

The British Library holds an internationally renowned collection of early modern manuscripts and printed books. As Curator of Early Modern Collections, you will assist lead curators in the Department of Western Heritage Collections with preparations for an exhibition on sixteenth-century British History. You will also use your specialist knowledge to catalogue early modern manuscripts and will help to interpret and present the Library’s early modern collections through online resources and engagement with academic and general users.

With a post-graduate degree, or equivalent, in sixteenth-century British history, you will have research experience using early modern manuscripts and printed books and a personal area of expertise relevant to the British Library’s collection. Strong palaeographical skills, excellent written and oral communication skills in English and the ability to promote the collections to a wide range of audiences are essential.

History in the Marking Journal – Looking for New Members

History in the Making is a national student history journal, published online twice a year. The journal aims to involve Australian university students in both sides of producing an academic journal, to give experience of the peer review process as an author to all students and as a reviewer and editor to honours and postgraduate students.

History in the Making is looking for new members to join our team.

We’re looking for PhD or Honours students in history, who are interested in the behind-the-scenes work involved in running a journal.

Our volunteer team shares our skills and experience to handle the journal’s:

  • liaison with our authors, reviewers, editors, and supporters;
  • graphic design;
  • publishing;
  • social media;
  • website management, and
  • database management.

If you know how to do any these things, or are keen to learn, then we want to hear from you.

The role will be easiest for someone based in Sydney. We meet about once a month, on weekends and weeknights, in Sydney.

National Gallery of Ireland: Curator of Italian and Spanish Art – Call For Applications

The National Gallery of Ireland (‘the Gallery’) is Ireland’s major national cultural institution devoted to the collection and care of fine art. Comprising some 16,000 paintings, drawings, watercolours, miniatures, prints, sculpture and decorative arts, the institution’s extensive holdings include masterpieces by many of the most celebrated figures in the history of western European art. In addition, the Gallery houses the most representative collection of historic Irish art. The national collections and archives are important resources for access by anyone with an interest in art and art education. Its associated disciplines play an important role supporting the work of the Gallery’s library, archives, research, conservation, education, exhibitions andcollection services staff. Funded mainly by the State, the Gallery employs more than 100 staff and provides free access to the public 361 days a year.

The Gallery wishes to recruit a Curator of Italian and Spanish Art. The overall responsibility of this post is to care for, research and provide information about the Gallery’s collection of Italian and Spanish Art. Reporting to the Head Curator (or nominated deputy), the Curator of Italian and Spanish Art will:

  • Research and publish on the Italian and Spanish works of art in the Gallery’s collection
  • Keep abreast with current scholarly research in these fields
  • Ensure that the collections of Italian and Spanish art are displayed to the highest standards
  • Curate exhibitions on Italian and Spanish art that contribute to the Gallery’s public programme
  • Propose new acquisitions and loans
  • Provide insurance valuations for works in the collection
  • Propose the priorities for conservation and agree on works to receive treatment
  • Ensure that the information on the Italian and Spanish works of art is up-to-date (on the Gallery’s website, labels and the collection registration system)
  • Take part in the Gallery’s lecture programme
  • Respond to queries from the public, external specialists and arrange visits and inspections where appropriate
  • Maintain and develop professional relationships with colleagues from other museums, academics, private collectors, dealers and auction house staff
  • Contribute to sponsorship proposals, press releases and other related documentation
  • Actively contribute to the Staff Development Programme
  • Complete other duties as required

The successful candidate will have:

  • An advanced third-level qualification in art history
  • Specialist knowledge and expertise of Italian and Spanish art
  • A record of publications in at least one of the two areas
  • Knowledge of the Italian or Spanish language
  • Strong research and analytical skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Outstanding organisation and planning skills, and a commitment to meet deadlines
  • A track record of self-motivation and the ability to work independently and on his/her own initiative
  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills and the ability to work as part of a collaborative project team
