Fixed Term Lecturer in History – University of Canterbury

The School of Humanities and Creative Arts within the College of Arts at the University of Canterbury is seeking to appoint one or two Fixed Term Lecturers (Teaching and Administration only) to support the History Programme. There is the possibility for either one appointment at 1.0 FTE or two appointments at 0.5FTE, and candidates should indicate their interest in one or both levels in their application. The term of appointment would be from February 2018 to December 2019.
 
The appointees’ principal duties will be the coordination and delivery of History courses at a range of levels, including Honours, and supervision and co-ordination of post-graduate students as appropriate. Other responsibilities will include appropriate pastoral care of students, administrative tasks, and possible supervision of tutors.
 
Candidates must hold or be near completion of a Ph.D. in History. The candidate will ideally have teaching experience at tertiary level, a record of research and publication, effective interpersonal skills and a collegial approach to teaching and administration. Knowledge of e-learning applications and the ability to integrate technology into teaching is desirable. An interdiscliplinary approach to historical knowledge is welcome and the candidate will be expected to offer both existing and new courses courses which complement and extend the History Department’s current offerings. While applications are invited from any field of history, strong teaching and supervisory experience in the history of Aotearoa New Zealand is preferred, as is the ability to teach into at least one other area of specialisation. An applicant appointed at 1.0 FTE will have teaching expertise in the history of Aotearoa New Zealand as well as capacity to provide courses related to another area of specialisation.

The role
The Studies in Religion discipline and the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry seek an appointment in the area of Islamic studies. The successful applicant will be required to teach in undergraduate programs, supervise graduate students, and actively contribute to the research performance of the Studies in Religion discipline. The Studies in Religion discipline at the University of Queensland is a small group of dedicated researchers and lecturers. We are looking for a colleague who is committed to high quality teaching and research, is collaborative, research active, and is prepared to develop the discipline’s engagement with the broader community.

The person
The successful applicant will have a PhD in the field of Studies in Religion, with a primary area of expertise in Islam. We are looking for an individual with a strong grasp of the history of Islamic thought and practice, with demonstrable expertise in the primary sources. They will require a familiarity with other religious and spiritual traditions, as well as the methods and theories underpinning the academic study of religion. The successful applicant will have an active plan for applying for research grants, including a willingness to participate in team applications for internal and external research funding. The candidate will be expected to assist in fostering a lively and dynamic research environment within the School.

THE PROGRAM. The University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program was established in 1984 to encourage outstanding women and minority Ph.D. recipients to pursue academic careers at the University of California. The current program offers postdoctoral research fellowships and faculty mentoring to outstanding scholars in all fields whose research, teaching, and service will contribute to the diversity and equal opportunity at the University of California. The contributions to diversity may include public service towards increasing equitable access in fields where women and minorities are underrepresented. In some fields, the contributions may include research focusing on underserved populations or understanding inequalities related to race, gender, disability or LGBT. The program is seeking applicants with the potential to bring to their academic and research careers the critical perspective that comes from their non‐traditional educational background or understanding of the experiences of members of groups historically underrepresented in higher education in the United States.

AWARDS AND APPOINTMENTS. Fellowships are awarded for research conducted at any one of the University of California’s ten campuses.

The award includes a salary starting at approximately $48,200 depending on field and experience, benefits including health insurance and paid vacation/sick leave, and up to $5,000 for research‐related and program travel expenses. Each award is for a minimum of 12‐months and may be renewable for an additional term upon demonstration of academic/research productivity.

We are seeking to appoint a Curator of Medieval Art and Design to join the Department of Sculpture, Metalwork, Ceramics & Glass.

The post-holder will be responsible for the development, care, research, display and interpretation of medieval art and design (excluding manuscripts, which are held in the National Art Library) in the Sculpture, Metalwork, Ceramics & Glass Department. The extensive European medieval collections are of national and international importance, and the post-holder will serve a wider role within the Department and the Museum as one of the medieval specialists, and will be expected to play an active role in the field of medieval studies and collecting, both nationally and internationally.

Applications are invited for a full-time, ongoing Lectureship or Senior Lectureship (US equivalent Assistant/Associate Professor) in the Media Studies programme of the School of English and Media Studies at Massey University. This position is based at the Manawatu campus in Palmerston North, New Zealand.

The School of English and Media Studies has a strong record in teaching excellence and pastoral care in an interactive learning environment. Courses are taught in internal and distance learning modes (including online delivery), at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The School currently offers programmes in English, Media Studies, Creative Writing, Expressive Arts, Public and Professional Writing, and Theatre Studies.

We are looking for a candidate with research and teaching strengths in social and cultural approaches to media. All applications will be carefully considered, but we particularly encourage applicants with additional specialisations in one or more of the following areas: popular culture, critical and cultural theory, digital media, gender studies, critical race studies.
Media Studies is offered as a major in both the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Communication. The undergraduate programme in both degrees currently includes courses across three major areas of specialisation: digital media production, social/cultural approaches to media, and medium-specific approaches/methodologies, including screen studies. An ability to contribute to more than one area, and to teach into the compulsory course 154.101 Introduction to Media Studies, may be an advantage. The graduate programme is available in the Master of Arts and Master of Communication, and offers a selection of courses in the above areas. The School of Histories, Languages and Cultures is looking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate for the project of Women, Property and Place in the World, 1500-1800. This is a fixed term post for two years.

The central aim of the project is to investigate the institutional and structural underpinnings of social and gender inequalities in the English past. The post involves joint research and publication on land records and family papers (correspondence, diaries, wills, accounts, maps/surveys, enclosure records and estate papers); early-modern printed political and religious pamphlets; court, finance and litigation records. Additionally, the post will involve management of the existing website and Twitter account and mentoring doctoral students in the research cluster. The successful candidate will join an existing and vibrant team of academic, early-career and postgraduate researchers working in the Gender, Place and Memory 1400-1900 interdisciplinary Research Cluster at the University of Hull. The successful candidate will have completed a PhD in a cognate area of research, to include social and economic history, cultural history, historical geography, early-modern political thought and/or literature. It is desirebale that candidates will have experience working on early-modern English archival and/or printed texts.
