Hortulus: Assistant Editor – Call For Applications

Hortulus: The Online Graduate Journal of Medieval Studies has four Assistant Editor job openings for the 2014 Spring and Autumn issues.

Assistant editors will serve for about five months, and will help in the editing and proofreading of the articles and reviews accepted by the journal. Assistants may also be asked to take on additional projects such as drafting and disseminating calls for papers, PR, and correspondence; opportuniries will be given to assistant editors who wish to gain more experience with HTML coding should they be interested. University of Pennsylvania – CLIR Postdoc in Early Modern Data Curation

The University of Pennsylvania Libraries seek an innovative and energetic CLIR Postdoctoral Fellow in Data Curation for Early Modern Studies to play an integral role in the working life of the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts at Penn’s Van Pelt Library, including overseeing the transition of the Penn Provenance Project (PPP) and its data to a new platform.

The candidate will hold a PhD in an area of early modern studies, with a concentration in the history of the book. Working knowledge of at least one non-English language is preferred. Experience with prior digital projects and some knowledge of programming preferred. Prior work experience in special collections is desirable.

3-year Postdoctoral Research Associate, “Adults at Play(s)”

Magdalen College proposes to appoint two postdoctoral research associates in connection with a collaborative project entitled Adults at Play(s). Both posts are for three years from 1 October 2014. Candidates must have a doctorate in hand by that date. They will already have demonstrated outstanding promise either in the study of dramatic literature or in experimental psychology, and will have an aptitude and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary work across these areas. The postholders will collaborate with three Fellows of the College (Felix Budelmann, Robin Dunbar and Laurie Maguire) in developing experimental and text-based research on the psychology of the audience, with particular reference to classical Greek and early modern English drama.

Encounters with the orient in early modern European scholarship (EOS),

Applications are invited for a 0.5 part time research assistantship, as part of a major research project funded by the HERA. The post is available from 1 November 2013 for a fixed term until 30 September 2016.

Funded by HERA the project will document the scholarly European encounter with Oriental culture between c 1500‐1800. The ‘Orient’ explored in this context is, first of all, a Biblical Orient, covering the religious area of Islam, Eastern Judaism and Christianity. Interest in this cultural, religious and linguistic area arose from Scripture Studies and theological and missionary concerns with the Eastern Churches and Islam. These delineate the early modern concept of ‘Orient’, and also determine our use of the concept. In a number of case studies, conferences, and exhibitions, the project will explore the early modern scholarly European encounter with the Orient.

British Library: Internship in the Medieval and Earlier Manuscripts Section – Call For Applications

The British Library is offering an internship in the Medieval and Earlier section of the History and Classics Department for a doctoral or post-doctoral student in the History of Art or another relevant subject.

The intern will be involved in all aspects of the work of the Medieval and Earlier Manuscripts section. The primary focus of the internship will be to enhance the online Digitised Manuscripts and Catalogue of Illuminated Manuscripts websites by creating and supplementing catalogue entries for medieval manuscripts and accompanying images, working under the supervision of the Curator of Illuminated Manuscripts.

Qualifications

The programme is only open to students who are engaged actively in research towards, or have recently completed a PhD in a subject area relevant to the study of pre-1600 illuminated manuscripts who have a right to work in the UK. 

Terms

The term of internship is either full time for six months, or part time for twelve months.  Applicants are asked to specify which term they would prefer in the application. The salary is £8.55 per hour (Full time is 36 hours per week). The internship will start in November 2013 after relevant security clearances are obtained.

Research Associate (Postdoctoral Fellow): Emotions in Literature (Three year appointment – Job no. 492581)
The successful candidate will propose and work on a well-formulated, significant and original project concerning emotions in literature or drama in English between 1500 and 1800, preferably leading to a monograph, under the supervision of Winthrop Professor Bob White, Programme Leader for ‘Meanings’ in the ARC Centre of excellence for the History of Emotions at the University of Western Australia.

As Research Associate you will play a prominent role in medieval and early modern emotions research by examining the meanings attributed to emotions in medieval and early modern Europe, and their modes of expression, transmission and regulation.

Research Associate (Postdoctoral Fellow): Passions for Learning (Two year appointment – Job no. 492582) 
The successful candidate will work under the leadership of Professor Yasmin Haskell at the University of Western Australia in the ‘Passions for Learning’ project. The broad aims of this project are to explore the role of the emotions in European education and knowledge cultures, 1100-1800.

As Research Associate you will have a PhD in early modern intellectual, religious, cultural, and/or literary history, and proficiency in Latin. Reading competence in one or more of: German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch will be well regarded. Scholars with research interests spanning European and non-European (for example, Asian) cultures are especially encouraged to apply. In addition to publishing the results of your own research, you will involve yourself fully in the life of the project (including conference organization, editing of collected volumes).

Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions/University of Melbourne: 2 Postdoctoral Fellowships – Call For Applications

The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions (CHE) seeks to appoint two Postdoctoral Fellows based at the University of Melbourne. In collaboration with the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies, University of Melbourne, the Centre seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to contribute to research projects in the history of emotions (Europe, 1100-1800). Working together with Professor Charles Zika and the Change Program of the Centre, the successful candidate will develop a project exploring the impact of deeply felt emotional experiences and rhetoric in stimulating and shaping group understanding and response to disasters faced by Europeans between the late fifteenth and the late seventeenth centuries. The project might focus on responses to such phenomena as plague, fire or war, or natural disasters such as earthquake, famine or flood. It might explore such ritual, literary and/ or visual responses as mechanisms for achieving relief or solidarity when facing the terrifying the impact of destructive events, and the immediate as well as longer term implications for models of communal life, organisation and meaning.
 
 
In collaboration with the School of Culture and Communication at The University of Melbourne, the Centre seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Fellow to a three-year research appointment in one of its four research programs, “Shaping the Modern.” Working with the program convenor, Professor Stephanie Trigg, and Senior Research Fellow, Dr Grace Moore, the successful candidate will develop a multi-disciplinary research project on emotions and the environment that extends the Centre’s research in the period 1100-1800 into the modern era, with a special emphasis on Australia’s relationship with its European emotional past, and the emotional continuities and discontinuities between pre-modern Europe and Australian settler culture. The project will explore affective, emotional responses to landscapes, environment, ecology or place, by European settlers and migrants.
 
 

University of Melbourne: McKenzie Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme – Call For Applications

The McKenzie Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme has been established to attract outstanding recent doctoral graduates to the University of Melbourne in areas of research priority for the university and its faculties, and in particular to recruit new researchers who have the potential to build and lead cross-disciplinary collaborative research activities inside and across faculties. The University offers a leading and lively research environment that is internationally engaged, public-spirited, and with many outstanding areas of research strength.

The objectives of the scheme are to:

  • assist the university to build an ambitious program of research activity, and
  • attract outstanding postdoctoral researchers to be part of that and to begin to build the next generation of research activity.

Applicants must have evidence of the award of a PhD, with the date of award considered to be the date of the official notification letter, from a university other than the University of Melbourne by either the closing date or, if not available at that time, by 1st November 2013.  The PhD must have been awarded no earlier than 1 January 2011. The McKenzie Postdoctoral Fellowships are intended for applicants who do not hold a fixed term or continuing appointment of greater than one year duration at the University of Melbourne.
