Folger Library: Curator of Early Modern Books and Prints – Call For Applications

The Folger Shakespeare Library invites experienced, innovative, and collaborative applicants for the position of Curator of Early Modern Books and Prints. The Curator has primary responsibility for our world-renowned collection of early modern books and prints. Some of the great strengths of this collection are English publications from the period 1470 to 1640 (including 82 copies of Shakespeares First Folio), Continental publications relating to the Reformation, and etchings by Wenceslaus Hollar. Lyell-Bodleian Research Fellow in Manuscript Studies – Call For Applications

The Bodleian Libraries, in association with the board of electors to the James PR Lyell Readership in Bibliography, propose to appoint a postdoctoral research fellow in manuscript studies from 1 October 2014, or as soon as possible thereafter, for a fixed-term of 3 years. The Fellowship is offered concurrently with the non-stipendiary Dilts Fellowship at Lincoln College.

The Fellow will undertake research on any aspect of the Canonici collection of Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts in the Bodleian, which is named after their Venetian collector Matteo Luigi Canonici (1727-1805/6). Research proposals will be invited from any area of manuscript specialism, including the study of texts (Latin, Greek, and vernacular), script, decoration and illustration, codicology (including binding), and provenance (including the history of libraries).

Previous experience of contributing to publications and presentations is essential, as is an interest in the work of the libraries, and desire to contribute to its work.

Only candidates who will have submitted their doctoral theses by the closing date will be considered; proof of submission will be required if a candidate has not been awarded their doctorate by the time of interview.

Casebooks Project Editor (Research Assistant/Associate) – Call For Applications

The Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge seeks to appoint an Editor to work on The Casebooks Project: A Digital Edition of Simon Forman’s and Richard Napier’s Medical Records, 1596-1634 (http://www.magicandmedicine.hps.cam.ac.uk).

The Casebooks Project is making one of the most extensive surviving sets of medical records in history publicly available. It combines the highest level of scholarship with cutting-edge digital humanities. Casebooks is directed by Dr Lauren Kassell and has been funded by a series of major awards from the Wellcome Trust.

The successful candidate will join the project team to work full-time transcribing and coding Richard Napier’s casebooks. He or she will also contribute to academic, educational and public engagement activities from time to time.

It is essential for candidates to have: an aptitude for detailed, systematic work, the ability to read difficult handwriting, and be capable of working both independently and as part of a team

The following would be desirable:

  • Expertise in early modern history, especially the histories of medicine, religion, astrology and the family
  • Proficiency in seventeenth-century palaeography
  • At least rudimentary Latin
  • Experience of XML and TEI

We will train the successful applicant in the necessary skills to do this work.

This would be an ideal position for a recent graduate planning to pursue a career in history or digital humanities, or a postdoctoral scholar seeking experience working on a major collaborative project.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 June 2017

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in the School of Culture and Communications

In collaboration with the School of Culture and Communication, University of Melbourne, the Centre seeks to appoint a postdoctoral research fellow to contribute to research projects in the history of emotions (Europe,1100-1800). Working together with Professor Stephanie Trigg the successful candidate will develop a project exploring the representation and expression of emotion on the human face, in literature, drama, art, or sculpture, or in early scientific discourses, between 1100 and 1800. Preference may be given to projects that range over several centuries, across different media, or across different languages. There would also be scope for projects that drew connections between pre-modern Europe (pre-1800) and later forms, especially in a colonial setting.

In addition to publishing his or her own research in this area, the Fellow will collaborate in publications and be involved fully in the life of the Centre. The Fellow will also assist with the co-ordination of relevant symposia and engage in public outreach. There is an expectation that the postdoctoral fellow will be involved in some Honours/ postgraduate supervision or teaching, but this is primarily a research-only position.

Applicants must provide a detailed application that addresses the position description and selection criteria; a curriculum vitae and a list of publications; and a 2-3 page description of the research project. The research project description should outline a program of research that would explore historical changes or continuities in the visual, textual, or theatrical expression of emotion on the human face between 1100-1800. If the project will also be considering material post-1800, it should indicate how it would also make connections with this earlier period.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies

In collaboration with the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies, University of Melbourne, the Centre seeks to appoint a postdoctoral research fellow to contribute to research projects in the history of emotions (Europe,1100-1800). Working together with Professor Charles Zika the successful candidate will develop a project exploring the field of emotions and visual culture, c.1450–1750. The project might focus on such topics as: the impact of religious and political change on the emotional deployment of visual objects in the devotional, ceremonial and festive life of European communities; the passions of iconoclasm as a motor of religious, social or political change; the emotional rhetoric of visual media in advancing propaganda and polemic, legitimating religious and political authority, or stereotyping religious, ethnic or social groups; the emotional use and power of the visual in the missionizing and colonizing of societies, within Europe or abroad.

In addition to publishing his or her own research in this area, the Fellow will collaborate in publications and be involved fully in the life of the Centre. The Fellow will also assist with the co-ordination of relevant symposia and engage in public outreach. There will the opportunity to be involved in research and activities related to an exhibition on art and emotion to be held at the National Gallery of Victoria in 2017. There is an expectation that the postdoctoral fellow will be involved in some Honours/ postgraduate supervision or teaching, but this is primarily a research-only position.

In order to strengthen the editorial programme of English language publications (primarily classical, medieval, and early modern studies), Brepols is seeking (for their UK office in Nottingham) a:

Publishing Manager

You will assist with the development of English language publications, in the first instance by working with the current Publishing Manager for English publications in classical, medieval, and early modern studies. Through this initial role, you will assist with the co-ordination of all aspects of book projects from inception to publication. You will establish and maintain good contacts with authors and Editorial Boards and follow trends within the academic world, principally (but not exclusively) within classical, medieval, and early modern studies.

You will develop into the role as Publishing Manager whereby you will: attract and present new projects; co-ordinate all aspects of projects through planning of peer review and assessment, copy-editing, production, providing necessary guidance (to authors, Editorial Boards and external readers, freelance copy-editors, etc), and administrative follow-up; formulate and monitor a project budget.

Your skills and experience:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; knowledge of French and other languages, including classic languages, will be an advantage
  • relevant university degree(s), with a broad interest in (European) history and literature and the capacity to acquire insight into subjects and disciplines that are new to you
  • project management skills, with the capacity to monitor and follow up projects at various stages of the assessment and production process
  • understanding of conventions within academic publication, and familiarity with academic referencing and idiom
  • high level accuracy and attention to detail; familiarity with general IT applications; familiarity with graphic design programs such as Indesign will be an advantage

University of Warwick: 3 Year PostDoc in Italian Vernacular Aristotelian Psychology

The University of Warwick is seeking a postdoctoral Research Fellow as part of the ERC-funded Starting Investigator Grant on ‘Aristotle in the Italian Vernacular: Rethinking Renaissance and Early-Modern Intellectual History (c. 1400-c. 1650)’. The project is a collaboration between the University of Ca’ Foscari, Venice (Dipartimento di Filosofia e Beni Culturali) and the University of Warwick (Department of Italian).

You will conduct research on topics related to the interpretation of Aristotle’s works in the Italian vernacular (roughly 1400–1650), with particular attention to Aristotelian psychology (De anima literature and that related to animals). Your main activities will involve research, writing articles as the basis for a monograph, the organization of colloquia, the editing of colloquia proceedings, and other tasks as required. You will have opportunities to develop your professional and teaching profile. You will work under the direction of Dr David Lines and Professor Simon Gilson in the Department of Italian.

You will have a PhD or equivalent in Italian, Classics, Philosophy, Intellectual History, or a relevant field; an excellent knowledge of at least English, Italian and Latin; and first-hand familiarity with medieval/Renaissance philosophy and the methods of research in Renaissance literature and/or intellectual history.

The position is for 36 months from 1 September 2014.

The ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions is currently advertising for 2 new postdoctoral research fellows each at The Universities of Adelaide and Queensland.


The Universities of Adelaide

The University of Adelaide is seeking to appoint two three-year post-doctoral research fellows. These appointments will focus on the ‘Change’ Program, investigating the drivers of change in society-wide emotional regimes, and the power of collective emotions to produce major cultural, social, political and economic change.

Research Fellowship in Early Modern Europe, 1500-1700 (Ref 492357)

Focusing on Early Modern Europe (excluding Britain) this Postdoctoral Research Fellowship will be awarded to an individual with proven capacity for research in this area and strong potential to contribute to the ‘Change’ program generally. Applicants for this position are invited to submit a brief (i.e. two-page) proposal for the research they would carry out under the fellowship.

Research Fellowship in the Emotional History of Law, Government and Society in Britain, 1700-1830. (Ref 492361)

Focusing on the role of Emotion in the English Criminal Courts, 1700-1830, this Postdoctoral Research Fellowship will be awarded to an individual with strong aptitude for research in this area and the potential to contribute to the ‘Change’ program generally. The successful candidate will contribute substantially to a collaborative project focussing on the emotional styles of English criminal trials during a period when the incursion of lawyers transformed their culture.

Working under the leadership of Professor David Lemmings, you will have a PhD in History or a related discipline (awarded within the last five years) and relevant publications. You will be expected to participate in the full range of activities of the University of Adelaide Node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions (CHE). If you are an innovative enthusiastic individual with a demonstrated track record in early modern or eighteenth-century studies and a capacity to engage in interdisciplinary research you are strongly encouraged to apply.

These fixed-term, full-time positions are available for three years, commencing by the beginning of 2015.

The successful appointees will develop a research project, within the ‘Meanings’ Program of the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions, Europe 1100-1800 (CHE), broadly related to any aspect of the history of emotions in any field of English literature from, roughly, the twelfth through to the eighteenth centuries.

The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions, Europe 1100-1800 (CHE) is a national humanities research initiative undertaken collaboratively across five Australian universities. Established in 2011 by the ARC’s Centres of Excellence program, and funded for $24.25M over seven years, CHE has its headquarters at the University of Western Australia, with research and outreach Nodes at the Universities of Queensland, Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide. The Centre is strongly interdisciplinary, drawing on the expertise of scholars in such diverse disciplines as social and political history, the history of ideas, literary criticism, art history, and musicology to investigate individual and collective emotional experience in one of the richest and most dynamic chapters in world history: that of medieval and early modern Europe. By studying earlier European experience and culture, the Centre aims to produce a new, interdisciplinary, and comprehensive understanding of the long history of emotions.

The role

The successful appointee will develop a research project, within the ‘Meanings’ Program of the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions, Europe 1100-1800 (CHE), broadly related to any aspect of the history of emotions in any field of English literature from, roughly, the twelfth through to the eighteenth centuries. The position-holder will be expected to undertake a plan of high-quality research and publication, as well as organising activities in support of the program and the Centre.

The person

Applicants should possess a PhD in a relevant field of English literature. An interest in the wider intellectual, religious, historical, or cultural contexts of English literature will be favourably considered. Knowledge of related Continental European, or classical, literatures may also be an advantageous.

This is a full-time continuing appointment at Academic Research Level A.
The remuneration package will be in the range AUD $58,763 – $79,708 per annum plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range AUD $68,753 – $93,258 p.a.).
