Research Associate @ Leverhulme Project: Inner Lives: Emotions, Identity, and the Supernatural, 1300-1900 – Call For Applications

Inner Lives: Emotions, Identity, and the Supernatural, 1300-1900 is a three-year project funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The project will explore personal and collective identities in western Europe and America, focusing on patterns of continuity and discontinuity over six centuries. The PI Malcom Gaskill (UEA) will work on the period 1500-1700, with CIs Sophie Page (UCL) focusing on 1300-1500 and Owen Davies (University of Hertfordshire) on 1700-1900.

This RA post will work with Dr Sophie Page and be based at UCL. The RA will visit archives and libraries in France, Italy and Germany, finding information that Page will use for her monograph, ‘Cosmology, Magic and Inner Lives’. This will primarily relate to the fields of late medieval cosmology, demonology, magic and medicine. The successful candidate will engage in original research related to the project and publish the results of his/her work through papers at scholarly conferences and in an academic journal.

The Research Associate will be based in London but will travel to Europe to work in archives; and deliver papers at academic conferences both in the UK and abroad.

This post is funded for 18 months in the first instance.

University of Southern California, LA: Assistant Professor History of Art (Including Early Modern Period) – Call For Applications

We seek a candidate that can act as chair of the research group in science studies and create an active research environment for the group’s researchers. The successful candidate will collaborate with the Head of Department on the future development of the research group and is expected to participate actively in fundraising, and in developing new teaching initiatives in history and philosophy of science at the Faculty of Science.

Applicants must document a strong international research record within history and philosophy of the natural sciences (including mathematics), preferably with a specialization within areas of relevance to scientific practice and/or to science education (e.g. philosophy of science in practice, socially relevant philosophy of science, integrated history and philosophy of science, or similar).

Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required. Project Manager for ‘Living With Feeling’ – Call For Applications

The Centre for the History of the Emotions at Queen Mary University of London seeks to appoint a Project Manager to co-ordinate the activities of a new Wellcome Trust Humanities and Social Science five-year Collaborative Award: ‘Living With Feeling: Emotional Health in History, Philosophy, and Experience’. The award will support an ambitious programme of inter-disciplinary research and public engagement into the history and meanings of ‘emotional health’. An announcement of the new award was made recently on the QMUL website.

The successful applicant will hold an undergraduate degree and will have experience of organizing large events, managing complex projects, and supporting public engagement activities in the arts, sciences, or both. The post might suit an early career academic with an interest in public engagement, or alternatively a candidate with significant experience in administration, media, or arts management.

The post will start on 2 November 2015, or as soon as possible thereafter. Starting salary will be in the range of £31,735 – 35,319 per annum inclusive of London Allowance subject to experience. The post is full time (1.0 fte or 5 days a week), however flexible working and part time candidates will be considered (please state preference in application).

The post-holder will be responsible for one sub-project on the memory of the English Reformation (either ‘Lives and Afterlives’ or ‘Events and Temporalities’) which he or she will be able to develop in accordance with his or her own expertise and interests. The post-doc will work closely with the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator in editing one of two volumes of essays and will assist with the organization and promotion of educational, outreach and impact activities associated with the project including workshops, a conference, a postgraduate symposium, public lectures and a digital exhibition.

Candidates should hold, or be about to obtain a PhD in a related discipline and will have specialist knowledge and experience of working with archival and printed material as well as relevant research methods and techniques within established research programmes. She/he must also be able to demonstrate excellent IT skills.

Princeton University: Assistant Professor in Medieval Latin – Call For Applications

The Department of Classics at Princeton University announces a position in medieval Latin at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in Fall 2016. The successful candidate should combine great scholarly promise with an ability to teach medieval Latin at the undergraduate and graduate levels. S/he will also contribute to teaching and developing interdisciplinary medieval studies courses in translation as well as to our beginning Latin sequence. The field(s) of specialization is open, but teaching and advising responsibilities will cover the entire chronological range of medieval Latin from ca. 400 to 1400 CE. Expertise in paleography and/or textual transmission is desirable.

The Faculty is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on the ‘Gersum Project: the Scandinavian Influence on English Vocabulary’, funded by the AHRC. The post holder will be based in the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic, University of Cambridge from 1 January 2016, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Research Associate’s main role will be to produce the project’s digital catalogue of words derived from Old Norse in nine late Middle English alliterative poems, and to contribute to accompanying elements of the website (especially the bibliography and the corpus of electronic texts).

The post-holder should have a PhD in the study of early English (Old and/or Middle) or Old Norse, excellent organisational skills and the proven ability to work to deadlines without close supervision. Excellent written and oral communication skills and a close familiarity with common IT packages including MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint are also essential, as is the ability to work as a team.
