The College hopes to elect not later than 14 March 2017 to a Harry F. Guggenheim Research Fellowship in Humanities and Social Sciences, with appointment from 1 October 2017. Candidates for the Research Fellowship should have recently completed or be about to complete a doctoral degree, and should be able to conduct research of outstanding quality on aspects of the human propensity for violence and aggression and its amelioration, from within the disciplines of history, philosophy, international relations, and human, political and social sciences. The duration of the Fellowship will be for three years. Like all Pembroke Research Fellows, the holder will be expected to do a limited amount of teaching for the College, but would require the permission of the Governing Body to undertake other paid work. The stipend will range from £22,494 to £25,298 and is reviewed annually.

Research Fellows are offered subsidised accommodation, in College or in College-owned flats or houses; where accommodation is not required the Harry F. Guggenheim Research Fellow will be provided with a study in College.

Applications are invited for a Teaching Fellow in English Literature of the late medieval to early modern period.

The successful candidate will have experience in the design and delivery of teaching within the Higher Education sector, and the ability to deliver pre-honours and honours undergraduate courses in English Literature, including postgraduate teaching as appropriate. Successful Candidate will also be expected to contribute to the administration of the subject area including course organisation, as well as to undertake course assessment.

This full-time (35 hours each week) post is available for a fixed-term period of 2 years from 1 January, 2017 (or as soon as possible thereafter) until 31 December, 2018.

The Making and Knowing Project seeks a three-year Postdoctoral Scholar, to start July 1, 2017.

The Department of History at Columbia University in the City of New York invites applications from qualified candidates for a postdoctoral position as part of the Making and Knowing Project, which is working toward the publication of an open access digital critical edition and translation of a late sixteenth-century French manuscript. The successful applicant will co-teach the laboratory seminar each semester with Professor Pamela Smith and other postdoctoral scholars, and take part in all activities of the Making and Knowing Project. For two of the three years, the Scholar will teach one section each semester of the Introduction to Contemporary Civilization, a central part of Columbia’s signature Core Curriculum. Core teaching requires instructors to attend Core Curriculum weekly instructor meetings and lectures, in addition to teaching a discussion based class twice a week (ca. 4 hours/week). The Scholar will have the opportunity to contribute content to the critical edition and to publish research in collaboration with the Making and Knowing team. The Scholar will hold the title of Lecturer in History.

The appointment start date is July 1, 2017. Renewal for a second and third year will be contingent upon satisfactory performance. Starting salary will be about $53,000, plus benefits, and a modest research stipend.

Eligibility Requirements: A PhD, preferably in history or a cognate discipline (such as art history, conservation, or history of science). Some experience in laboratory, conservation, or studio work, and a knowledge of French language and history. A background in early modern European history and digital skills will be beneficial. Candidates must hold the doctoral degree by July 1, 2017 or have received it within the previous three years.

Postdoctoral Editorial Fellow at Speculum – Call For Applications

Applications are now being accepted for a two-year Postdoctoral Editorial Fellowship at Speculum, the journal of the Medieval Academy of America.

The Speculum fellowship represents a significant fulfillment of one aspect of the Medieval Academy’s continuing efforts to recognize and support extraordinary medievalists in the early stages of their careers. We believe that after the fellowship tenure, the Speculum fellow will be a more experienced scholar and editor and will be an exceptionally attractive candidate for academic positions, as well as for significant publishing and editorial opportunities.

This two-year full-time post at Speculum offers qualified individuals the opportunity to develop as scholars and editors. The term of the award is subject to the Fellow’s acceptable performance of the duties required, as determined by the Editor of Speculum. Fellows will receive:

  • $43,000 annual stipend

Fellows are expected to:

  • Continue to develop research program 1 day/ week.
  • Assume responsibilities for a particular set of editorial tasks at Speculum.   • Participate in the cultural life of medieval studies in the Boston area.
  • Reside in the Boston area during the fellowship period.

Eligible candidates must meet the following requirements and demonstrate the following qualifications:

  • PhD in some field of medieval studies completed before the end of spring term, 2017, but no earlier than January 1, 2011
  • Attention to detail and evidence of a high level of scholarly precision, particularly with regards to bibliographic detail

Newcastle University wish to appoint to appoint an outstanding postdoctoral researcher for a three-year research fellowship hosted by the Newcastle University Humanities Research Institute (NUHRI). The successful candidate will pursue a personal research project, contribute to the work of NUHRI more generally, and enhance the profile of humanities research both within and outside Newcastle University.

The NUHRI Fellowships are intended primarily to enable early career researchers to undertake a research project of their own design that will lead to an original and significant piece of publishable work. Applications will be considered from candidates working in all areas of the humanities (broadly defined). Projects that are multi- or interdisciplinary in nature are particularly welcome.

The post is full-time for three years, beginning in October 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The College invites applications for an A H Lloyd stipendiary Junior Research Fellowship open to those whose research is principally in one or more of the following subject areas: Archaeology; English; History; Modern and Medieval Languages. The Fellowship is tenable for four years, normally from not later than 1st October 2017, and is not renewable. Open to candidates who hold a first degree, or a higher degree or who are studying for a higher degree. Candidates are advised that a Junior Research Fellowship is intended for a researcher early in their career. A successful applicant is expected to be either a graduate student, probably in the latter stages of research leading to a PhD Degree (or equivalent), or a post-doctoral researcher who has completed their PhD Degree after 1st January 2016.

The stipend for a Junior Research Fellow is currently £21,605 pa (with a PhD) and £17,703 (without a PhD) and the successful candidate will be afforded the full privileges of a Fellow of the College.
