British Library: Internship in Ancient, Medieval and Early Modern Manuscripts – Call For Applications

The British Library is pleased to be able to offer an internship in the Ancient, Medieval and Early Modern Manuscripts section of the Western Heritage Department, for doctoral and post-doctoral students in History, Art History, Medieval Language or Literature or another relevant subject.

The focus of the internship will be to enhance our Explore Archives and Manuscripts online catalogue, by creating or enriching catalogue entries for medieval manuscripts and publicising them in blog posts and other interpretative material. The intern will assist curators working on The Polonsky Foundation England and France Project: Manuscripts from the British Library and the Bibliothèque nationale de France, 700-1200. This may involve writing or researching short descriptions of manuscripts and groups of manuscripts. The intern will be involved in others aspects of the work of the Ancient, Medieval and Early Modern Manuscripts section, including responding to enquiries and providing talks for students and visitors, thereby gaining insight into various curatorial duties and aspects of collection care. During the internship at the British Library, the intern will enjoy privileged access to printed and manuscript research material, and will work alongside specialists with wide-ranging and varied expertise.

This internship is designed to provide an opportunity for the intern to develop research skills and expertise in medieval history and manuscripts, and in presenting manuscripts to a range of audiences. Previous interns have given feedback that they felt a valued member of the team, gained professional confidence and developed their career by carrying out a ‘real’ job with specific duties.

The programme is only open to students who are engaged actively in research towards, or have recently completed a PhD in a subject area relevant to the study of medieval manuscripts and who have a right to work in the UK full time.

The term of internship is full time (36 hours per week over 5 days) for 6 months. The salary is £9.75 per hour, which is the current London Living Wage. The internship will start in July 2017 or as soon as relevant security checks have been completed.

University of Cambridge (Robinson College): Fellow and College Lecturer in English – Call For Applications

Robinson College invites applications for a Fellowship and College Lectureship in English with effect from 1 September 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. The appointment, which is tenable for five years in the first instance, is open to both men and women and is subject to the Statutes and Ordinances of the College. The Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) seeks to build lasting and effective relationships with leading scholars from Australia and overseas. IASH fosters high level research in the humanities with a thematic focus on Intellectual and Literary History, Critical and Cultural Studies, the History of Emotions, and Science and Society.

The Visiting Scholars Programme aims to encourage exceptional scholars working in areas relevant to our research strengths to spend a period of time—from one or two weeks to several months—conducting research and collaborating with scholars within the Institute. IASH aims to select a mixture of early, mid, and senior career scholars.

The Programme is ideally suited to scholars who are on sabbatical or research leave and who are interested in collaborating with research staff in IASH, along with colleagues in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry invites expressions of interest from early career researchers (normally within 5 years of the award of a PhD) interested in undertaking a 3 year postdoctoral fellowship.

The Faculty of English wishes to appoint to a University Lectureship in Literature and Visual Culture from 1 September 2017. Applicants should have critical and research interests in Literature and Visual Culture and one or more of the following areas: medieval studies, digital scholarship, and material texts.

The successful applicant will be able to conduct original research in their field, generating new interpretations, arguments, methods and associations which will have international reach and significance. They will be expected to engage closely with the work of one or more of the research groups in the Faculty and, where appropriate to the research concerned, to develop proposals to attract significant external funding. We are particularly seeking to strengthen our research group in medieval studies.

The Faculty intends to appoint a scholar whose work will make a substantial difference to the way in which the study of Literature and Visual Culture is pursued and who is able to develop the kinds of public and professional engagement that will maximise the impact of their research. Candidates should have a completed PhD and an exceptional record of research in a relevant subject area, along with high-quality publications.

The successful applicant will support and maintain the University’s national and international reputation for excellence in teaching. The Department of History seeks to appoint a full-time Lecturer in Early Modern British History to expand our existing team. The person appointed will engage in scholarly research and publication. They will develop a research-led teaching portfolio, having a leading role in our team-taught first year course in early modern British history, contributions to our popular MA in Early Modern History, and postgraduate supervision. They will perform pastoral duties and participate in departmental, faculty and college administration as required.

Applicants are invited from candidates with an outstanding research record in any aspect of British history from 1500 to 1750. A completed doctorate and experience of undergraduate teaching is expected. Experience of lecturing and teaching seminars at postgraduate level is desirable.

The Department of History at Rutgers University announces a post-doctoral fellowship for scholars pursuing research in race and gender studies. The successful applicant must have the doctorate in hand at the time of application, be no more than six years beyond the Ph.D., and be able to teach history courses. The fellowship of $60,000 is for one year and includes benefits and a $5,000 research stipend.
