Vittore Branca International Center for the Study of Italian Culture – New Postgrad and Postdoc Scholarships 2013

A new scholarship announcement has been issued, for a three 6-months scholarships aimed at PhDs, and six 3-month scholarships aimed at post-docs at the Vittore Branca International Center for the Study of Italian Culture.

The scholarships are offered to scholars wishing to further their studies of Italian culture – especially that of the Veneto – with an interdisciplinary approach in one of the following fields: art history, literature, music, drama, antique books, Venetian history and comparative cultures and spiritualities.

Lichtenberg-Kolleg Junior Research Fellowships – Call For Applications

The Lichtenberg-Kolleg invites applications for up to 7 Junior Research Fellowships.

Opening its doors in 1737 Göttingen quickly established itself as one of Europe’s leading Enlightenment universities. Named after one of the most important and versatile representatives of the Göttingen Enlightenment, the Lichtenberg-Kolleg is an interdisciplinary research institute with a strong focus not only on the Enlightenment(s), but also on “bridges” between the human and natural sciences and on issues of religion and modernity.

For the period January 2014 to July 2015 we are inviting junior scholars to join one of the research teams for the study of either:

  • “The Nature of Man in the European and Atlantic Enlightenment(s)”, or:
  • “The Ethics of Living: Questions of Justice, Poverty, Life and Death in the Human and Natural sciences”

Furthermore, the Lichtenberg-Kolleg is announcing additional Junior Research Fellowships for the study of “Religious Toleration in the Modern World: Theory and Practice.” In cooperation with the Herzog August Library Wolfenbüttel and in the spirit of its famous librarian Lessing, we are inviting applications to join a research group of up to 6 Junior Research Fellows.

Brill Fellowships at CHASE – Call For Applications

The publishing house Brill (Leiden) is generously sponsoring an annual research Fellowship at the Warburg Institute’s Centre for the History of Arabic Studies in Europe (CHASE).
The Fellowship has been made possible by the “Sheikh Zayed Book Award” which was awarded to Brill Publishers in March 2012 for publishing excellence in Middle East and Islamic Studies.
The Brill Fellowship at CHASE to be held in the academic year 2013-14 will be of two or three months duration and is intended for a postdoctoral researcher. The Fellowship will be awarded for research projects on any aspect of the relations between Europe and the Arab World from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.

University of Iceland: PhD and Postdoctoral fellowships – Call For Applications

The Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Iceland announces two fellowships in medieval studies: one PhD fellowship and one Postdoctoral fellowship. Both fellowships are for a three-year period starting autumn 2012.

At the University’s centenary in 2011 the University Council decided to strengthen medieval studies at the university by supporting both a PhD and a Postdoctoral scholarship through the newly established Centenary Fund. The fellowships are under the aegis ofthe Centre for Medieval Studies, an interdisciplinary research centre and a platform for all scholars in medieval studies within the University and the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies.

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Medieval Studies

Applicants must have received a PhD degree within the last five years or have submitted a thesis that has been approved for defence. The thesis must be on a topic within medieval studies. Part of the responsibilities of the postdoc fellow (25%) consists in administrative duties within and on behalf of the Centre for Medieval Studies. The application must contain:

  • Description of the planned research (500-800 words).
  • Certified diplomas.
  • Detailed CV.
  • Copies of the applicant’s most important publications.
  • Two letters of recommendation (must be sent directly to Eiríkur Smári Sigurðarson, director of research, School of Humanities, Aðalbyggingu, Háskóla Íslands, Sæmundargötu 2, 101 Reykjavík, Iceland).

The centre accepts applications within all areas of medieval studies. The fellowship decision is made by the Board of the Centre for Medieval Studies.

PhD Fellowship in Medieval Studies

Applicants must fulfil conditions for PhD studies at the School of Humanities at the University of Iceland and this must be documented in the application. The application must contain:

  • Description of the planned research project (500-800 words). The project shall be within the area of medieval studies in a subject taught at the University of Iceland.
  • Certified diplomas and transcripts of passed university exams.
  • Detailed CV and list of publications.
  • Copies of most important publications, including theses.
  • Official description of grading scale (only for applicants with exams from universities outside Iceland).
  • Two letters of recommendation (must be sent directly to Eiríkur Smári Sigurðarson, director of research, School of Humanities, Aðalbyggingu, Háskóla Íslands, Sæmundargötu 2, 101 Reykjavík, Iceland).

The centre accepts applications within all areas of medieval studies but will prioritise applications falling within the expertise of the Centre’s members. The Board of the Centre makes the final decision on who receives the grant.

Deadline for applications is 1 May 2012. Applications must be submitted on application forms available at the homepage of the Centre for Research in the Humanities (application form).

PhD scholarships – University of Amsterdam and Swansea University – Call For Applications

Two sets of studentships for PhDs have been announced at both Swansea University and the University of Amsterdam:

Swansea University Academic Supervisor: Dr Liz McAvoy

Funding is available for two PhD studentships focusing on aspects of the literary, spiritual and historical landscapes of Wales and its borderlands during the Middle Ages. Ideally, each will engage with and develop both past and current research in this and associated areas undertaken by members of the Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Research (MEMO) in the College of Arts and Humanities, using an interdisciplinary approach to address gaps in our current understanding. In particular, the research will address issues such ethnicities and identity, or the operations of gender, space and spirituality in the regions under scrutiny, especially how such issues played out in the texts and communities of the contested borderland regions.

University of Amsterdam

Two fully funded positions in medieval history are now available at the University of Amsterdam in connection with a project examining Jerusalem as a holy site for Christians by the medieval Franciscan Order. Ideal candidates may come from a medieval history background, but the fields of art history, religion, literature, and archaeology are equally germane so long as candidates are able to access Latin and other medieval texts.

University of Sydney – Postgraduate Scholarship in Medieval and Early Modern Studies – Call For Applications

Postgraduate Scholarship in Medieval and Early Modern Studies

A full-time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate with a good Honours degree in any aspect of medieval or early modern studies to undertake research leading to a PhD in Medieval and Early Modern Studies. The project is to investigate attitudes towards death expressed by medieval and/or early modern writers, with a particular focus on the writings of condemned prisoners facing execution.

The position forms part of a larger research project on medieval and early modern attitudes towards death being undertaken at the University of Sydney through the ARC Centre of Excellence in the History of Emotions (CHE). Other aspects of death currently under consideration by postdoctoral research fellows within the project include medieval attitudes towards suicide and early modern attitudes towards public execution.

Eligibility:

Applicants should have an Honours degree with a major in some aspect of medieval and/or early modern studies. They must have a demonstrable understanding of how to read and interpret medieval and/or early modern texts. They must have a facility with one or more medieval and/or early modern languages. Applicants must be Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents.

Amount awarded:

Valued at $26,000 per annum for up to three years, plus a total of $13,500 research and travel funding over three years.

Alternatively, if the candidate has applied for and is successful in obtaining an APA, the scholarship can be offered as top-up funding of $5,500 per annum.
