ANZAMEMS Postgraduate Travel Bursary Funding 2014

As part of its commitment to support postgraduate research, ANZAMEMS is again this year offering $5000 for a round of postgraduate travel bursaries. Bursaries of up to $500 will be awarded for the purpose of attending a conference and presenting a paper.

Eligibility:

  • Open to currently enrolled postgraduates and ECRs within 2 years of award and not in full-time employment.
  • Applicants must be financial members of ANZAMEMS for 2014.

Selection process:

  • Funding round advertised via the ANZAMEMS mailing list and newsletter: 7 May 2014.
  • Due date for applications: 28 May 2014.
  • Announcement of successful applicants: 11 June 2014.
  • A sub-committee of the ANZAMEMS committee of three members will assess the applications.
  • The Assistant Treasurer will also be on the sub-committee to coordinate the application and selection processes, communicate with applicants, and arrange payment of prizes.
  • Priority will not necessarily be given to greater distance travelled, but the sub-committee will reserve the right to award smaller bursaries where distance travelled is relatively short.

Conditions:

  • Bursaries can be used to attend any conference EXCEPT the Biennial International ANZAMEMS Conference.
  • Successful applicants are required to submit to the ANZAMEMS committee a brief report (1 page), suitable for publication in the ANZAMEMS newsletter, no longer than 2 months after the conference.
  • In case of non-attendance at the conference, the applicant will be required to reimburse the bursary to ANZAMEMS within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Should attendance at the conference lead to a publication, successful applicants are expected to acknowledge the assistance of an ANZAMEMS Postgraduate Travel Bursary.
  • Applicants are also encouraged to develop their conference paper to be submitted as an article to Parergon.

Application process – applicants should submit (max of 5 pages):

  • A brief CV
  • Proof of eligibility (e.g., proof of enrolment)
  • Details of the conference and proof of acceptance of the applicant’s paper
  • A brief statement outlining benefit of conference to research/career
  • A brief budget of costs associated with attending conference
  • A statement of other sources of funding available (if applicable).

‘Ideas and Enlightenment’: The Long Eighteenth Century (Down Under) – Travel Grants

‘Ideas and Enlightenment’ at the University of Sydney

The 15th David Nichol Smith Seminar organizing committee is pleased to announce that they will be able to offer a limited number of travel grants to expand postgraduate participation in the 2014 ‘Ideas and Enlightenment’ conference. These are provided through generous funding contributions from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the Putting Periodisation to Use Group, and the Sydney Intellectual History Network at the University of Sydney. These scholarships are part of an extended postgraduate program at DNS XV, which will be supported by the newly formed DNS Graduate Caucus. We anticipate that the program will include paired mentoring between junior and senior colleagues at the conference and a professional development workshop. Those awarded scholarships travel grants would be expected to be actively involved in this program.

Conditions:

  • Travel grants (up to a maximum amount of $2000) will be awarded as reimbursement of travel expenses.
  • Funds may be used for transportation to and from the conference and accommodation only, not for meals).
  • Partial grants may be offered.
  • Recipients must attend the full conference and present a paper at the David Nichol Smith Seminar XV at the University of Sydney.
  • Costs incurred, up to the amount granted, will be reimbursed upon presentation of receipts. In certain cases, fares or other expenses may be paid directly by the DNS XV organizing committee through the office of the Sydney Intellectual History Network.
  • Applications from international and Australian postgraduate students are invited.

Eligibility:

The recipient must be actively engaged in full- or part-time doctoral study in eighteenth-century studies, in any field, at a recognised university.

Applications should include:

  1. A completed application form
  2. A copy of their DNS proposal for a 20 minute paper (250-word paper proposal and 2-page CV)

S. Ernest Sprott Fellowship 2014 – Call For Applications

The late Samuel Ernest Sprott, from Tasmania, was an academic in the department of English at Dalhousie University, Canada and was best known for his work on John Milton, notably Milton’s Art of Prosody, his first book, which appeared in nine editions between 1953 and 1978, and John Milton, A Maske: the Earlier Versions. His book Suicide: The English Debate from Donne to Hume was published in 1961. He also published a collection of poems in 1955.

The S. Ernest Sprott fellowship is to be awarded annually to an Australian citizen who is an outstanding scholar less than Forty-five (45) years of age at the time of the award for scholarly study outside of Australia intended to lead to a book relating to dramatic or non-dramatic English Literature of the sixteenth or seventeenth centuries.

Applicants must demonstrate an outstanding record of scholarship. They must outline a program of scholarly study outside Australia, leading to a book relating to dramatic or non-dramatic English literature of the sixteenth or seventeenth centuries. It is recommended that the applicant seek some kind of formal affiliation with a relevant library or university. Fellowship funds will be paid in quarterly installments providing that the committee is satisfied with the progress of the candidate who will submit quarterly reports.

Information Session on Research Opportunities in Canada

The High Commission of Canada presents: Information Session on Research Opportunities in Canada

This presentation will provide information on Canadian research grants in all disciplines available to academic staff and postgraduate students.

It will cover funding available from Canada’s three major federal research councils – the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

The High Commission of Canada will  also provide information on the prestigious Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program and Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships, and other grants offered by some of the provinces, as well as other non-government organisations.

Patricia Fleming Visiting Fellowship in Bibliography and Book History – Call For Applications

The Patricia Fleming Visiting Fellowship in Bibliography and Book History will again be awarded this year.

The award is for a scholar outside the University of Toronto to work in the city during 2014-2015. The amount of the award is $2000, with University of Toronto library privileges, and office space at the Faculty of Information. The area of research interest for 2014 is open, but preference may be given to those working in non-Canadian subjects.

Australian Academy of the Humanities: Humanities Travelling Fellowships Scheme

The Australian Academy of the Humanities annual Humanities Travelling Fellowships Scheme is one of the Academy’s most popular programmes. Since 1985 the Academy has supported more than 150 early-career researchers to undertake research overseas.

Fellowships of up to $4,000 are available to permanent resident scholars in Australia working in the humanities.

Australian Academy of the Humanities: Publication Subsidy Scheme – Call For Applications

The Australian Academy of the Humanities annual Publication Subsidy Scheme provides support of up to $3,000 for the publication of scholarly works of high quality in the humanities. The scheme is designed to assist humanities scholars based in Australia. Both independent scholars and those working within an institution are eligible to apply.

Lemmermann Fellowships – Small Research Grants for Study in Rome – Call For Applications

The Lemmermann Foundation offers scholarships to masters and doctoral students in the classical studies and humanities. Fields of study include but are not limited to Archaeology, History, History of Art, Italian, Latin, Musicology, Philosophy, and Philology. Applicants must provide evidence for their need to study and carry out research in Rome. Topic of research must be related to Rome or the Roman culture from the Pre-Roman period to the present day.

ELIGIBILITY:
Applicants must:

  1. be enrolled in a recognized higher education program or affiliated with a research institute;
  2. have a basic knowledge of the Italian language.

DEADLINE:
Next deadline for sending applications is March 15, 2014.

STIPEND:
The monthly scholarship amount is established in 750 euro.

Resident Fellowships at Linda Hall Library – Call For Applications

Linda Hall Library resident fellowships for 2014 are now available. Fellowships up to $3,500 per month will assist scholars in financing a research visit.

Resident fellowships for the duration of a minimum of 1 month to a maximum of 9 months are offered in support of research projects in science, engineering, and technology; in the history of science, engineering and technology; or in interdisciplinary topics that link science or technology to the broader culture.

Recipients of fellowships are expected to work full time on their research projects while at the Library, to engage with other resident scholars, and to offer a presentation on their work to the general public.

The application deadline is January 3, 2014.

Newberry Library Fellowships in the Humanities, 2014-15

The application deadline for Newberry Library Long-Term Fellowships is quickly approaching. Additionally, they offer Short-Term Fellowship opportunities for smaller-scale research projects. Please read on for more information.

The Newberry’s fellowships support humanities research in residence at the Newberry. If you study the humanities, we have something for you. Our collection is wide-ranging, rich, and sometimes eccentric. We offer a lively interdisciplinary community of researchers; individual consultations on your research with staff curators, librarians, and scholars; and an array of scholarly and public programs. Long-Term Fellowships

These fellowships support research and writing by post-doctoral scholars. The purpose is to support fellows as they develop or complete larger-scale studies which draw on our collections, and also to nourish intellectual exchange among fellows and the Library community. Fellowship terms range from four to twelve months with stipends of up to $50,400.

Short-Term Fellowships

PhD candidates and post-doctoral scholars are eligible for short-term fellowships. The purpose is to help researchers gain access to specific materials at the Newberry that are not readily available to them elsewhere. Short-term fellowships are usually awarded for a period of one month. Most are restricted to scholars who live and work outside the Chicago area. Most stipends are $2,500 per month.

We also invite short-term fellowship applications from teams of two or three scholars to collaborate intensively on a single, substantive project. Each scholar on a team-fellowship is awarded a full stipend.
